These 2-Ingredient Bagels are Easy to Make and Taste Amazing

If you're wondering whether 2-ingredient bagels could possibly be any good, here's a spoiler alert: They're delicious. In general, homemade bagels require a yeasted dough mixture that goes through a couple of rounds of proofing to rise properly before getting a water bath (which sets the crusty exterior) and then baking. This dough is a points-friendly recipe on WW (formerly Weight Watchers) used for years when participants want carbs without sacrificing their points. The short ingredient list is enough to entice anyone into baking therapy. Here's how to make delicious bagels.

How to Make 2-Ingredient Bagels

Technically, these aren't really 2-ingredient bagels, considering you use an egg wash and the seasonings of your choice. We love everything bagel seasoning for its salty, garlicky crunch. But you could go plain or create your own flavor. Adding some cinnamon and raisins to the dough can be lovely.

For the 2-Ingredient Bagels

  • 1 cup self-rising flour—or make your own blend by mixing 1 cup flour, 1½ tsp. baking powder, and ½ tsp. salt.
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt, which can be regular or nonfat, although you'll want a brand that produces a thick, strained texture so you don't end up with soggy dough.

For the Topping

  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • Everything bagel seasoning (or whatever seasonings you prefer)

2- Ingredient Bagel-Making Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. In a large bowl, stir together the flour and yogurt until combined. The texture will be sticky and crumbly.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, form the 2-ingredient bagel dough into a ball and knead for 3 to 5 minutes until it is no longer sticky but smooth and elastic.
  4. Shape the dough into an even circle, then divide into four equal balls using a sharp knife or a dough scraper.
  5. Roll each ball into a rope that's about 6 inches long, then pinch the ends together to make a bagel shape. Place each bagel on the prepared baking sheet, brushing with the egg and desired toppings.
  6. Bake approximately 25 minutes until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.

A bit chewier than the average bagel, this recipe's not quite at bakery status. But the Greek yogurt gives the bagels a slightly tangy flavor, reminiscent of sourdough bread. Slicing them and giving them a few minutes in the toaster, then adding a schmear of cream cheese, is the perfect way to enjoy them with your morning coffee. After you master this easy recipe, move on to more bread recipes, or try your hand at focaccia art.
